Draft Clinton

(Posted also over at Kos.  Where this idea went down like a lead brick.  What do you all think?)

Now, I've been as guilty as some with snide, nasty comments against Hillary.  In anger, I've spewed some terrible stuff, and for that, I'm really embarrassed and sorry.  It's hard reading some of that stuff with the benefit of hindsight.  It only proves that I don't have the thick skin necessary to succeed in politics.

So today, I'm saying "Thank you, Hillary.  Thank you for a perfect speech kicking off the General Election."

And I'm also starting the Draft Clinton movement.  But it might not be what you think--follow below the fold.

Draft Clinton.  We need the poise, intelligence and wit that Clinton brings to the podium.  We need the unquestioned support of the Clintons on board with the Democratic campaign, not only for their fundraising ability, but to show the country that the Great Primary War is truly over.  Only Clinton can bring all of that.

But I'm not talking about Hillary, or even Bill.  They will have their roles to play, but I'm talking about Chelsea.  Major props to Moxie Gurl for this idea.

Barack might not pick Hillary for the VP slot and he's made clear that the VP choice will be made in August, not now in June.  So, we've got this summer to push through, attacking McCain all the way. No matter what Hillary and Bill say and do this summer, the MSM will be constantly questioning their commitment to the Democratic cause.  That's what the Media wants:  controversy and disunity.  And the Media will create that controversy any way they can.  So how can the Clinton family show their total commitment to Obama's campaign, in a way that will help them in the future?

Chelsea is now 28.  Her poise has been on display at the small rallies she has appeared at on behalf of her mother at various college campuses around the country.  With the end of Hillary's campaign, Chelsea has the choice of returning to her hedge-fund job, or starting her own political career. Building her own "stump speech" in support of Obama and appearing as a "headliner" in her own right at some rallies around the country this summer and fall could also serve as Chelsea's "introduction" to voters around the country.  And if many of those appearances just happen to be in a Congressional District targeted for her in 2010, well.......  Spending some time in Congress would be a great jumping-off point for a run for the Senate in New York, after her mother runs for governor.

It does mean that Chelsea will have to start answering questions from the press.  Her reticence with the press has been well-documented and she will have to start dealing with them, if she does choose to follow her parents into politics.  As an Obama surrogate, her talking points wouldn't be very difficult to work with and it might be a good opportunity to "put her toe in the water."  She can give her "Chelsea's view of the White House" interview after the inauguration of Obama in February of 2009, thus keeping her in the minds of voters.  There might need to be a book published here somewhere, perhaps December of 2009, launching her campaign for Congress.

But Chelsea's advantage is very similar to (shudder) Chimpy McCokeSpoon, but without his known brushes with drugs and drunk driving.  Name recognition is very powerful; both the Bush and Clinton families have used it to very great effect.  And like President Chimpy, she will be insulated from the scandals of her parent's administration.  Seriously, how could anyone bring up her father's Presidential Library donors and expect it to stick to Chelsea?

Everybody "wins" with this idea:  The Clinton family shows total dedication to Obama's campaign; the MSM can't possibly suggest the Clintons aren't fully on board.  Chelsea gets to softly launch her own political career, in front smaller, but very supportive crowds.  She'll have the choice to appear as a surrogate on TV if she wishes.  The Democratic Party shows strong unity through the summer after a bruising primary fight and gains a new "rising star" for the future.  Even the Media "wins," getting a story to follow around as they track the "rise of Chelsea," as she crosses the country attacking "Grampy" John Sidney McCain III.  One or two joint appearances with Obama might benefit all of the good guys as well, keeping them both in the spotlight and continuing the starvation McCain of free media.

What I think is that (none / 0)

we were not able to get her to the nomination when the process was actually open to that possibility.  I think that we Hillary supporters need to be good Democrats, so that if we ever need to fight for her (or anyone else, for that matter) again, we can ask other Democrats to follow our example, and be good Democrats.

Hillary Clinton, Bill Clinton, Chelsea Clinton, and Dorothy Rodham are going to vote for Barack Obama in the fall.  This Hillary supporter is going to vote for Barack Obama in the fall.

Please join the five of us.

Re: What I think is that (none / 0)

I'm not sure that you understand where I'm coming from:  I'm an Obama supporter, from his keynote speech in 2004.

But I really understand the passion of Clinton supporters and appreciate it.  And I really am thankful to Hillary for her campaign and the fantastic speech she gave today.

But what I don't want to see over the next two months is the MSM digging, digging, digging, trying to create the disunity story, looking for any lack of support from the Clintons, either Bill or Hillary.  And without Obama tabbing Hillary for VP, I'm afraid that's all the story will be.

So, how to kill off that story, add some "spice" to the whole thing to keep the attention of the MSM and continuing to starve McCain of free coverage?  How to prove the Clintons are behind Obama 100%?  Getting Chelsea more involved in this campaign would do the job quite nicely, and if that also just happened to kick-start her own political career, then the Party is all the better for it.

Honestly (none / 0)

and as a father, the last thing I would want to do would be to pressure that young woman's life in any way shape or form.

IF and when she decides to go into public service, she's ours. Until that point, she is (in my book) decidely off-limits.

It's actually kind of a silly diary. (2.00 / 1)

Chelsea is going to get on with her life and career in New York, and we need to get busy working for Barack Obama, whoever he chooses to run with.

How hurtful is that? (none / 0)

So basically, your asking Chelsea to say to hell with her parent's feelings and campaign for Obama?

You know, you really are one of those people who think people are nothing more than chess pieces.

Re: How hurtful is that? (none / 0)

Not at all.  Hillary and Bill will both be campaigning for Barack Obama, I assume from her speech today.  So, why not Chelsea as well?

And, there could be a great benefit for Chelsea, a launch of her own political career, if and only if she wants it.

And yes, I do think of people sometimes as chess pieces.  It's part of what I do.  Barack, Hillary, Bill and (possibly) Chelsea are all on a team, the Democratic Team.  And I asked myself this question:  what would help this team win, and benefit both the Clintons and Obama?  I've thought about Hillary as the VP choice, as have many here.  I've thought about Hillary as a Supreme Court nominee as well.

But what about Chelsea?  A smart, capable young woman in her own right.  Does she want to start a political career?  If so, wouldn't this be a great opportunity to do so?  If not, forget the whole idea.

But I'm looking for a benefit for the Clintons, Obama, the Democratic Party and thus all of us.

Re: Draft Clinton (none / 0)

From what I understand Chelsea is not particularly keen on the political arena and was only driven to campaign on behalf of her mother when she saw the beating her mother was taking on the trail. In other words she was driven purely by the ties of a daughter for her mother.

After witnessing what her mother and father have been through, I think if Chelsea wants a political career she will do it on her on terms. Bill and Hillary have already sacrificed enough, I don't think Chelsea is obliged to do anything. Don't forget he already has Caroline Kennedy helping out.

Re: Draft Clinton (none / 0)

meh.. why? There was plenty of pushback this year because H. Clinton would have represented a continuation of dynastic politics, and whether that is a Clinton, and Bush or a Kennedy I tend to be against it. Chelsea should live her own life, not some sycophantic version of what her parents want. She'd have to have some experience other than being a wall street trader. hell, at this juncture the Bush twins have more real life experience then Chelsea, one working with AIDs patients in Africa, the other teaching and working with UNICEF.

Re: Draft Clinton (none / 0)

Lord, just what we need.  Another trust fund baby casting their lot in with the rest of the political class.  Don't get me wrong, I am sure Ms. Clinton is bright and capable.  But were she truly a "women of the people" she'd be out in the streets  fighting the good fight, not sitting behind the desk working at a hedge fund.

We need to draft candidates committed to the interests of the middle class and poor, not Wall Street elites.  Chelsea has done nothing in her young life that indicates she is interested in anything but fattening her own bank account and building clout among power brokers.

The notion that she is somehow worthy of political office at this point in her life just seems ludicrous.  It should take more than a family name to qualify for political office, as if the Bush family legacy weren't evidence enough.

Re: Draft Clinton (2.00 / 2)

harsh

look at all the other families that have done good - the Kennedys', the Rockefellers, Roosevelts

The Bushs' are the bad apple.   Don't smear the Clintons in with them, just because the a-hole son of Bush I decided to mess with our country

Re: Draft Clinton (none / 0)

Fair enough.  My Bush comparison was beyond the pale. Still, I stand by the rest of my comment.  Chelsea Clinton has exhibited nothing that makes her worthy pf political office, at least not at her young age.

It would be unfair (none / 0)

It would be unfair to draft Chelsea Clinton.  If you're going to reinstate the draft, it should be across the board, everybody over 18, the way it used to be.  Targeting the child of an ex-president for the draft seems unfair.

On the other hand, If Chelsea actually wants to be a soldier, there are plenty of military recruiters that can help her.  And they are offering big bonuses!
