John Edwards in Keene

I finally got to see John Edwards in person at today's community meeting in Keene.  The audience of about 300 people were serious people -- they looked to me like undecided or leaning Dem primary voters.  There was no wild applause (or "rock star" atmosphere) but I think they mostly liked what they heard.

In my full report at the Edwards blog, I've got a rough transcript of what JRE had to say and how he responded to the (serious, informed) questions.  He spoke for about an hour.

Re: John Edwards in Keene (3.00 / 3)

Your paraphrasing:

Q: National debt, how to afford your programs after repealing Bush tax cuts?

A: Is deficit top priority?  There are good arguments that it is, but I think while we should not increase deficit and work to reduce it, health care, energy, inequality are bigger problems.   Cannot sustain growth without dealing with those three, deficit secondary to that.  Can get more revenue by windfall profits tax on oil companies, higher taxes on capital gains.  "I don't want to live in a country with a few rich people" and the rest poor.  Baby steps will not help us solve problems.  Universal health care, universal access to college, comprehensive effort to end poverty.  These can't wait for the next generation.  I am bold, not careful.

When I hear talk about how ending the deficit is the most important thing, it reminds me of a quote from FDR:

We are poor indeed if this Nation cannot afford to lift from every recess of American life the dread fear of the unemployed that they are not needed in the world. We cannot afford to accumulate a deficit in the books of human fortitude.

My sig is the very next line of that speech.

"And so in the place of the palace of privilege, we seek to build a temple out of faith and hope and charity."-FDR

Re: John Edwards in Keene (3.00 / 1)

Edwards overall "people first, deficit second" really strikes a chord with me. It is one of his points that has solidified my support.
